The Reluctant Bed Wetter

Mr Bacchus walked into the room, and peed on the carpet in front of his dismayed humans for the first time in twelve years. As they sprinted to contain the mess, the phone in our secret lair jangled. We were on the case!

An animal is in trouble? I'll be right there!

Since Bacchus was an older male dog, infection was less likely but never impossible. Did he have urinary bladder stones? Diabetes? Adrenal disease?

Happily, Bacchus' xrays didn't show stones in his bladder. His urinalysis and culture didn't grow any bacteria. However, his blood work was suspicious of one of two things: leukemia or tick disease.  We crossed our paws for tick disease, the least of the evils, even though he was an apparently tick-free short coated house dog.

Tick disease, specifically Ehrlichia, is a bacteria that lives inside white blood cells and is spread by tick bites. There are no tick control products yet that kill ticks faster than infected tick bites spread the bacteria. It is now endemic in San Diego, meaning it's here to stay. It can cause dramatic illness such as life threatening anemia, but can also slowly damage dogs' kidneys while they act completely normal. Luckily we test for it yearly!

What a relief!

We loaded 3 drops of Bacchus' blood into the test, waited ten minutes, and zing! Happy news! Instead of cancer, he had Ehrlichia and needed a month's worth of inexpensive antibiotics.

We have to brag about our human a little. She remembers to feed us, saves lots of animals, and usually has lots of common sense. When she’s well fed. Bark of the Neighborhood

"Is Maya missing?" Claire, Sky Blue the Aussie's human asked over the Ring camera speaker. Looking down at Maya, glued to her calf, Melissa said "No, she's right here." Suddenly remembering that the neighbor's pest control company had accidentally come to our house instead, our human ran out to the backyard. The side gate was open!  The next morning on our walk, we got the lowdown.   Who, me? "You were right! After you left, I found an open side gate! Another Great Escape

For my latest in human entertaining, I've refrained from escaping from our backyard. They like to recount my numerous adventures jumping through windows, climbing fences, shimmying through the drain, and disappearing when it's most inconvenient (for example on moving day ... my human had to go back to our old house to find me).  very funny Yesterday Nacho created a diversion by pooping in the living room (he gets very excited at walk time and there are mere seconds to get him outdoors to go ... he's ancient like me). When my mom tried to toss the bag onto the front porch, I saw my opportunity and made a break for it, then casually sauntered down the front steps with my leash trailing behind me. reenactment  I may have taught them a little too well, because I was calmly followed to the sidewalk and my leash stepped on to halt me. It helps that I never try to play in traffic. You're welcome.
